One of JATCO’s customers needed a new mold to produce taper evident plastic caps that are used on the face of a gas meter The customer uses the mold to make 8 of caps the same size, but different logos for the companies they supplied. The caps are made with a single color of polyacetal, an engineering grade thermoplastic used in precision parts requiring high stiffness, low friction, and excellent dimensional stability.
The mold’s existing design, while perfectly functional required 1.5 hours to take apart and change the mold elements that formed the logos on the top of the caps. JATCO took an innovative approach to the mold and redesigned it so the mold elements could be accessed from the outside of the mold instead of taking the mold apart. In addition, the changes to the mold, which weighs about 500lbs, can be made with an Allen wrench.
This new, improved design change means that:it took less than 5 minutes instead of 1.5 hours, a reduction of over 90% of the time required. The reduction in time means that the supplier will be able to:
